GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
This course is an in-depth, practical analysis of issues faced by health information managers as they address basic management functions: planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. A case method approach is utilized with problem-solving and decision-making activities. Numerous assignments are given that require critical thinking skills.

OVERVIEW: In any online course it is optimal that students get to know one another and build a sense of community. Students also need to learn a bit about how to turn in assignments and participate in discussions before the actual assignments begin.Activities
WEEK 1: Introduction and History of Performance Improvement/Smart Goals
OVERVIEW: Students will be introduced to historical perspectives on quality and performance in healthcare. The history of performance improvement will be reviewed and the role that these landmarks played in healthcare today. There is a long tradition of quality and performance improvement in healthcare which spans from colonial times to the present. In this course students will be introduced to developments, reforms and legislation that laid the foundation of modern healthcare.Read, Watch, Review

Week 2: HEALTHCARE QUALITY BASICS (2-3 WEEKS)
OVERVIEW: The students will be provided with a general overview of quality and performance improvement as it is applied in healthcare organizations. The students will introduced to a generic performance improvement model and commonly used performance improvement terms. The philosophy of continuous performance improvement will be introduced along with historical and present performance improvement models. Monitoring performance through data collection will be reviewed along with PI frameworks which will include Six Sigma, Lean and Lean Six Sigma.Read, Watch, Review
