What was important the "choice" conversation is
that it raised the question on why we are calling selective enrollment schools
"public" if not everyone can get into them. The choice of school's
impact families leaves them at a disadvantage according to the text. Parents
might have problem with transportation, dress code, and losing fair
marketplace.
One of my biggest take-ways from reading chapter 1
is that CPS changing schools and making it harder to get in makes it difficult
for parents and communities to do the very best to keep their students engaged
and in school. "Black parents' ability to truly choose may be hindered by
limited access to transportation, information, and time, leaving them on the
losing end of supposedly fair marketplace."
