HIA 3910-TECHNICAL PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE (PPE)

GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
The Professional Practice Experience (PPE) I is designed to allow the student an opportunity to obtain actual work experience in theoretical and application-based procedures previously studied in the Health Information Administration Program. Students will work under the supervision of a qualified Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, or other qualified personnel as determined by the PPE site. Students will also receive consultation from the HIA program PPE Coordinator, as necessary.
Through this experience, the student develops insight, understanding, and skills required to supervisor or direct the operations of a health information department. The student will be able to get hands-on experiences in functions and responsibilities associated with leading the departmental resources and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local requirements impacting health information records.

Week One - Professional Practice Experience (PPE)
There will be an orientation session for those completing their Management PPE in Spring, 2023. This meeting will be scheduled for January 17, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
Overview: To provide the learner a clear overview of course expectations, learner- Professional Practice Experience (PPE) site accountabilities and to create a space where the learner can question as well as engage the content deeply and resolve clarify questions.
This week we will also cover directions for developing PPE Goals. Goals are statements of intended outcomes upon completion of this PPE. The goals should provide a sense of direction and motivation as well as serve as performance guidelines, and aid in decision making and evaluation. Goals should have the characteristics of Being...SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound.

Week Two - Virtual HIM Department Tour
Overview: The learner will take a virtual tour of St. Clair Memorial Hospital where the learner will get a opportunity to view traditional roles found within a HIM department, hear each of the individuals in these roles explain their responsibilities and see how they perform some of their primary tasks. The video also showcases non-traditional roles that HIM professionals can perform outside of the HIM department.
