Mood and mind-altering chemicals have been used in almost every society, since the beginning of recorded history. The first part of the course examines the use of mind altering drugs in selected societies around the world. We then briefly explore the neurobiology of drug effects on the brain. The second part of the course
will examine contemporary issues in the United States: the illicit drug trade, drugs in the criminal justice system, approaches to treatment, and the legalization debate. This is an interdisciplinary course co-taught by experts in cultural studies, addiction studies, and drug policy.
